Some thoughts on writing a life…

My roots are a tobacco farm at the union of three counties where a house was moved over an oak tree – and the tree sheltered a family. Times were often hard, but belief in doing the right thing carried us forward. Our story is resilience, persistence, and hope.

Our ethos is defined by honesty, decency, hard work, and welcome.

What defines your life?

Try these prompts:

  • Complete the phrase, “I come from…” (credit to Laura Hope-Gill)
  • Describe an early memory in 400 words – about a page
  • Make a list of the people and experiences that shaped your life
  • What words come to mind when you think about home?
  • What’s your theme song, and why?
  • Write about something for which you’re grateful – with no limitations on length or form; see where it takes you

Quiet your own internal judge. Simply get it down on paper or computer. Put it away for a while if you need to; it will be there when you return.

Once your singularly unique experience comes into form, you’ll have your starting point. Share the thing only you can. Make it your gift to the world.

When in doubt, start where you are.
